The 5th International Rights of Nature Tribunal took place on Wednesday, November 3rd, and Thursday, November 4th at 4 pm (GMT) in Glasgow, alongside the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP26). Due to COVID and traveling restrictions, this Tribunal was a hybrid event – online through Zoom and in person at the Auditorium of the University of Strathclyde.

The Fifth International Rights of Nature Tribunal heard two fundamental ecological cases facing the world today: the false solutions to the Climate Change crisis and the Amazon, a threatened living entity. The cases were presented by frontline, impacted communities and experts from around the world, and was heard by a panel of globally recognized judges, who examined and ruled on the cases from a Rights of Nature perspective: Enrique Viale (Argentina), Alberto Acosta (Ecuador), Nancy Yáñez (Chile), Atossa Soltani (EE.UU.), Rocío Silva Santiesteban (Perú), Osprey Orielle Lake (USA), Nnimmo Bassey (Nigeria), Lisa Mead (UK), Carolyn Raffensperger (USA), Yaku Pérez (Ecuador), and Princess Esmeralda (Belgium), and were presided over by Leonardo Boff (Brazil).

The aim of this Tribunal is to bring maximum visibility to the current key struggles to protect the world’s ecosystems and confront the false solutions that are being presented in the face of these crises as well as the solutions emerging from civil society, and to offer legal rulings and precedents that may aid communities and activists in their struggles to protect and restore these ecosystems, and advance the legal recognition of Nature as a rights-bearing entity.

The objective is to mobilize citizens through the creation of a platform of associations calling for the recognition of the Rights of Nature, the Rights of the Amazon, and exposing the false solutions to Climate Change as well as the opportunities to halt the Climate crisis.

El 5º Tribunal Internacional de los Derechos de la Naturaleza tuvo lugar el miércoles 3 y el jueves 4 de noviembre a las 16 horas (GMT) en Glasgow, en paralelo a la Conferencia de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático (COP26). Debido a la COVID y a las restricciones de viaje, este Tribunal fue un evento híbrido: en línea a través de Zoom y en persona en el Auditorio de la Universidad de Strathclyde.

El Quinto Tribunal Internacional de los Derechos de la Naturaleza escuchó dos casos ecológicos fundamentales a los que se enfrenta el mundo hoy en día: las falsas soluciones a la crisis del Cambio Climático y el Amazonas, una entidad viva amenazada. Los casos fueron presentados por comunidades afectadas de primera línea y expertos de todo el mundo, y fueron escuchados por un panel de jueces reconocidos mundialmente, que examinaron y dictaminaron los casos desde la perspectiva de los Derechos de la Naturaleza: Enrique Viale (Argentina), Alberto Acosta (Ecuador), Nancy Yáñez (Chile), Atossa Soltani (EE.UU.), Rocío Silva Santiesteban (Perú), Osprey Orielle Lake (EE.UU.), Nnimmo Bassey (Nigeria), Lisa Mead (Reino Unido), Carolyn Raffensperger (EE.UU.), Yaku Pérez (Ecuador), y la Princesa Esmeralda (Bélgica), y fueron presididos por Leonardo Boff (Brasil).

El propósito de este Tribunal es dar la máxima visibilidad a las actuales luchas clave para proteger los ecosistemas del mundo y confrontar las falsas soluciones que se presentan ante estas crisis, así como las soluciones que surgen de la sociedad civil, y ofrecer sentencias y precedentes legales que puedan ayudar a las comunidades y a los activistas en sus luchas para proteger y restaurar estos ecosistemas, y avanzar en el reconocimiento legal de la Naturaleza como entidad portadora de derechos.

El objetivo es movilizar a los ciudadanos a través de la creación de una plataforma de asociaciones que reclamen el reconocimiento de los Derechos de la Naturaleza, los Derechos de la Amazonía, y exponer las falsas soluciones al Cambio Climático así como las oportunidades para detener la crisis climática.
