A World Devouring Machine: A Movie on Mining, Resistance and the Tribunal’s visit to Carajás

From the largest open-pit iron ore mine on the planet to the territories that bear its consequences.

Filmed during the visit of the International Rights of Nature Tribunal to the Carajás Corridor in Pará, Brazil, A World Devouring Machine, by Selina Giorgio, documents the socio-environmental realities surrounding the Carajás mining complex — a region marked by deforestation, land grabbing, rural massacres, slave labor, and systematic violations of the Rights of Nature and of forest peoples.

At the center of the film is the Carajás mine, owned by Vale S.A. — the largest iron ore mine in the world. From here, exceptionally high-grade iron ore feeds global steel production, largely exported to Asia and Europe.

The so-called “Vale train” — more than 300 wagons stretching up to 4 km — transports over 112 million tons of iron ore per year from Pará to the Port of São Luís, Maranhão. The railway cuts through Indigenous territories, quilombos, and rural settlements. Trains thunder through communities up to 35 times per day, carrying 40,000 tons per trip, dispersing mining dust, fragmenting land, and reshaping entire ways of life.

The Tribunal’s delegation traveled through the Carajás Corridor — a mining and cattle-ranching frontier connecting Marabá to Canaã dos Carajás — where some of Brazil’s most violent rural massacres occurred. What the judges witnessed were not abstract policy debates, but lived realities: pollution, territorial pressure, forced displacement, and decades of socio-environmental conflict.

And yet, this is not only a story of extraction and devastation, but rather a story of resistance, as Indigenous peoples, quilombola communities, and peasant movements have organized through territorial mapping, assemblies, environmental monitoring, land occupations, and alliances with universities and research institutions to defend their territories and forests.
