After their visit to Volta Grande do Xingu and the Carajás corridor in Brazil, the International Rights of Nature Tribunal will present the summary of Rights of Nature violations in the Amazon that will form the judges’ final verdict. The launch of the Global Parliamentarian Front for the Rights of Nature will also be announced at the press conference. 

The judges of the International Rights of Nature Tribunal will hold a press conference in Belém on Thursday, July 28th at 9 am to announce a partial report on rights violations in the Amazon. The event will take place at the Federal University of Pará (UFPA), during the X Pan-Amazonian Social Forum (FOSPA).

The delegation, composed of judges from South Africa, Ecuador, Peru, the United States, and Brazil, has conducted an extensive round of visits to areas of conflict in Altamira, Anapu, Marabá, Parauapebas, and Canãa dos Carajás.

The press conference will be led by three Tribunal judges: the coordinator of the delegation, prosecutor Felício Pontes, from the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), and Blanca Chancosa, indigenous leader from Ecuador. Representatives from the regions visited by the delegation will also be participating in the press conference to talk about the impact of logistics and the mining chain in the state. The representatives will be Rose Bezerra (Pastoral Land Commission), from the Marabá region, Francineide Ferreira (Conselho Ribeirinho), from Xingu, and Larissa dos Santos (Justiça nos Trilhos), from Maranhão.

VISIT

The judges’ agenda was built together with local organizations, among them the Pastoral Land Commission (CPT) and Xingu Vivo. During the visit, which took place between July 18th and 27th, the judges were able to witness the situation of hundreds of families that are under the sights of large enterprises. In Altamira, they met with riverbank dwellers and fishermen who, suffering a destroyed river, still seek redress, seven years after the inauguration of Belo Monte – whose legacy of impoverishment and violence in the region is undeniable. In the municipality of Anapu, the delegation spoke with leaders of rural settlements threatened with death by illegal timber barons linked to local politicians.

In the region of Marabá, the judges were able to visit the exclusionary mosaic of Conservation Units of Serra dos Carajás, which, on the one hand, prevents local populations from accessing the territory’s natural spaces, and on the other hand, guarantees the exploitation of the largest iron mining caverns in the world, controlled only by a large private company, Vale. They also visited the villa built by Vale just for its high-ranking employees, nicknamed the “Brazilian Belgium” by the residents of Parauapeba, a neighboring town impacted by the mining company’s action in the region.

The delegation also got to know the peasant occupations which, under the tension of at least fifty repossession suits filed by Vale, remain in resistance, without knowing what tomorrow will be like. And in the Carajás corridor, the judges visited rural settlements and indigenous villages that have defended the Amazon forest with their lives, based on their territorial claims.

In this sense, the judges were able to see first-hand that destructing the Amazon means destructing the lives of countless traditional communities whose management of Nature is in fact protection and not destruction. And as it turns out, the degraded Amazon hides even more serious violations – that is, violations of human and territorial rights which deeply impact the environment in a cycle that inextricably feeds back on itself. 

PARLIAMENTARY FRONT

The launch of the Global Parliamentary Front for the Rights of Nature will also be announced during the press conference by Para State Deputy, Marinor Brito (PSOL). The Parliamentary Front will be launched on the 28th, during FOSPA.

The other judges of the Tribunal, Maial Paiakan (Kayapo, Brazil), Cormac Cullinan (South Africa) and Ailton Krenak (Brazil) will be present at the meeting. The event will be broadcast online, at the link provided below.

Juízes internacionais farão coletiva em Belém para anunciar relatório sobre violações de direitos na Amazônia

Após visitarem a Volta Grande do Xingu e o corredor Carajás, Tribunal Internacional dos Direitos da Natureza apresentará resumo de violações que vai subsidiar o veredicto final dos juízes sbre a Amazônia. Na coletiva, realizada na UFPA durante o FOSPA, será também anunciado lançamento da Frente Parlamentar Internacional Pelos Direitos da Natureza

Os juízes do Tribunal Internacional dos Direitos da Natureza irão realizar uma coletiva de imprensa em Belém, dia 28 de julho, às 9 da manhã, para anunciar um relatório parcial sobre violações de direitos na Amazônia. O evento acontece na Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), durante o X Fórum Social Pan-Amazônico (Fospa).

O grupo, composto por juízes da África do Sul, Equador, Peru, Estados Unidos e Brasil, realizou uma extensa rodada de visitas em áreas de conflito em Altamira, Anapu, Marabá, Parauapebas e Canãa dos Carajás.

A coletiva será capitaneada por dois juízes do Tribunal: o coordenador da delegação, o procurador Felício Pontes, do Ministério Público Federal (MPF), e a indígena Blanca Chancosa, do Equador. Além deles, representantes das regiões visitadas pelo grupo também participarão: Rose Bezerra (Comissão Pastoral da Terra), da região de Marabá, Francineide Ferreira (Conselho Ribeirinho), do Xingu, e Larissa dos Santos (Justiça nos Trilhos), do Maranhão, para falar dos impactos da logística e da cadeia da mineração no estado.

VISITA

A agenda dos juízes foi construída em conjunto com organizações locais de defesa de direitos, entre elas a Comissão Pastoral da Terra (CPT) e o Xingu Vivo. Na visita, realizada entre os dias 18 e 27 de julho, os juízes puderam presenciar a situação de centenas de famílias que estão sob a mira de grandes empreendimentos. Em Altamira, encontraram-se com ribeirinhos e pescadores que, sofrendo com um rio destruído, ainda buscam reparação, sete anos depois da inauguração de Belo Monte – cujo legado de pauperização e violência na região é inegável. No município de Anapu, conversaram com lideranças de assentamentos rurais, ameaçadas de morte pelos barões do madeiramento ilegal, ligados a políticos locais.

Na região de Marabá, os juízes puderam visitar o excludente mosaico de Unidades de Conservação da Serra dos Carajás, que, por um lado, impede as populações locais de acessar os espaços de natureza do território, e por outro garante a exploração das maiores cavas minerárias de ferro no mundo, controlada apenas por uma grande empresa privada, a Vale. Visitaram, ainda, a vila construída pela Vale apenas para seus funcionários de alto escalão, apelidada de “Bélgica brasileira” pelos moradores de Parauapeba, cidade vizinha impactada pela ação da mineradora na região.

Estiveram, ainda, em visita a ocupações de camponeses que, sob a tensão de ao menos cinquenta ações de reintegração de posse da Vale, permanecem resistindo, sem saber como será o dia de amanhã. Por outro lado, no corredor Carajás, os juízes percorreram assentamentos rurais e aldeias indígenas que têm defendido com a própria vida a floresta amazônica a partir de suas reivindicações territoriais.

Nesse sentido, os juízes puderam observar que o problema da destruição da Amazônia passa, na realidade, pela destruição da vida de um sem número de comunidades tradicionais, cujo manejo da natureza, ao contrário de destruí-la, a protege. Ocorre que a Amazônia degradada esconde violações ainda mais graves. Isto é, violações de direitos humanos e territoriais impactam profundamente o meio ambiente em um ciclo que se retroalimenta de forma indissociável. 

FRENTE PARLAMENTAR

Durante a coletiva, será também anunciado o lançamento da Frente Parlamentar Internacional Pelos Direitos da Natureza, pela deputada estadual paraense Marinor Brito (PSOL). A Frente Parlamentar será lançada no dia 28, durante o FOSPA.

Estarão presentes na coltetiva os demais juízes do Tribunal, Maial Paiakan (Kayapo, Brasil), Cormac Cullinan (África do Sul) e Ailton Krenak (Brasil). O evento também será transmitido online, pela página de Facebook da entidade.
