Nancy Yáñez

Nancy Yáñez is a lawyer and holds a master’s degree in International Law,  specializing in Human Rights, and is a Doctor of Law (her thesis dealt with the Chilean water framework in 2014). She was a member of the Special Commission for Indigenous Peoples (1990 – 1993), a collaborator of the Commission on Historical Truth and the New Deal with Indigenous Peoples (2003). Founder and co-director of the Observatory for the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Citizen’s Observatory.

Nancy Yáñez es abogada y tiene una maestría en Derecho Internacional mención Derecho Humanos y es Doctora en Derecho (su tesis fue sobre el modelo chileno de agua en el 2014). Integró la  Comisión Especial de Pueblos Indígenas (1990 – 1993). Fue colaboradora de la Comisión de Verdad Histórica y Nuevo Trato con los Pueblos Indígenas (2003). Fundadora y co-directora del Observatorio de Derechos de los Pueblos Indígenas y del Observatorio Ciudadano.

Ha asumido la representación legal de comunidades indígenas, campesinos y pescadores artesanales en instancias judiciales y administrativas, a nivel nacional e internacional. Ha escrito varios libros y artículos sobre los derechos de los pueblos indígenas, el territorio y el agua. Es profesora de la cátedra de Antropología Jurídica de la Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Chile y directora del Centro de Derechos Humanos de la misma Facultad.

She has assumed the legal representation of indigenous communities, peasants and artisanal fishermen in judicial and administrative cases both nationally and internationally. She has written several books and articles on the rights of indigenous peoples, land and water. She is a lecturer in Legal Anthropology at the Law School of the University of Chile and director of the Human Rights Center of the same university.
