Patricia Gualinga

Patricia Gualinga (Ecuador) is a defender of native rights and Mother Earth, and the former foreign affairs leader of the Native Kichwa People of Sarayaku, a community located in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Patricia’s leadership has contributed to the struggle of the Kichwa people of Sarayaku for the protection of the Living Forest in their ancestral territories. Patricia Gualinga presented a historical case before the Inter-American Human Rights System (SIDH) that ended in 2012. The Native Kichwa people of Sarayaku is now facing other threats such as oil extraction projects by Chinese companies in their territory, and the long conflict over the exploitation of the sacred Bobonaza basin. Patricia is known nationally and internationally because of her ongoing work in defending the rights of native people and the call she has made to amplify the call to keep fossil fuels underground in the Amazon.

Patricia Gualinga (Ecuador) es defensora de los derechos de los nativos y de la Madre Tierra, y ex líder de asuntos exteriores del Pueblo Nativo Kichwa de Sarayaku, una comunidad ubicada en la Amazonía ecuatoriana. El liderazgo de Patricia ha contribuido a la lucha del pueblo Kichwa de Sarayaku por la protección del Bosque Vivo en sus territorios ancestrales. Patricia Gualinga presentó un caso histórico ante el Sistema Interamericano de Derechos Humanos (SIDH) que finalizó en 2012. El pueblo nativo Kichwa de Sarayaku enfrenta ahora otras amenazas como los proyectos de extracción de petróleo de empresas chinas en su territorio, y el largo conflicto por la explotación de la cuenca sagrada de Bobonaza. Patricia es conocida a nivel nacional e internacional por su trabajo continuo en la defensa de los derechos de los pueblos originarios y el llamado que ha hecho para ampliar el llamado a mantener los combustibles fósiles bajo tierra en la Amazonía.
