Rights of Nature Tribunal calls to save the Shihuahuaco tree.

The Shihuahuaco is an ancient Amazonian tree that can live up to 1500 years and grow as tall as 60 meters. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the balance and diversity of the Amazonian ecosystem due to its slow growth, long life, and towering stature. These long-lived giants provide vital nutrients, water, and information to younger trees through intricate underground connections.

During the nineteenth Conference of the Parties (CoP) of CITES in Panama City on November 17, 2022, a momentous decision was made: With 74 votes in favor, 13 against, and 18 abstentions, totaling 105 votes from member countries, the Shihuahuaco (Dipteryx spp.) was approved to be included in Appendix II of CITES.

Despite the urgent need for action, the public sector requested a two-year grace period to put regulatory measures in place. This delay allows for the continued exploitation of these ancient trees, putting the Amazonian ecosystem at even greater risk.

In January 2024, the Congress proposed Law No. 31973 to amend the Forestry and Wildlife Law for zoning Amazonian forests. However, concerns arise due to unconventional processes and unclear rules. This law halts forest zoning, allowing unrestricted deforestation, which benefits illegal loggers. Additionally, it grants landowners automatic permission to cultivate clean crops or pastures without environmental authority consent, potentially leading to uncontrolled forest destruction.

The Rights of Nature Tribunal calls for Law No. 31973 to be immediately revoked by the Peruvian Congress and urges for international regulations to be complied with regarding the November 2024 CITES decision on the ban of Shihuahuaco tree commercialization. Let’s advocate for sustainable forestry practices and environmental conservation!
