In light of recent developments and a concerning leak of statements by Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso, the International Rights of Nature Tribunal wishes to express its deep concern and commitment to upholding the democratic values and the Rights of Nature, as championed by the people of Ecuador.

On August 20, 2023, an overwhelming 58.95% of Ecuadorians made a clear and resounding decision to preserve the Yasuní-ITT oil beneath the subsoil. This decision was not just a vote; it was a manifestation of the Ecuadorian people’s unwavering dedication to the defense of Nature and the preservation of life.

However, these statements made by President Lasso have raised concerns about the potential disregard of this democratic mandate. The Rights of Nature Tribunal firmly believes that democracy is the cornerstone of any just society, and respecting the will of the people is essential to its functioning.

We urge President Guillermo Lasso to honor the democratic mandate expressed by more than 5.5 million voters. The Rights of Nature and the Rights of Ecuadorian citizens to express their will must be upheld. The world is watching, and Ecuador has been a global symbol in recognizing the intrinsic rights of the environment. The Yasuní-ITT oil decision was a historic step in this direction, and it is imperative that it is not undermined.

A la luz de los recientes acontecimientos y de una preocupante filtración de declaraciones del Presidente ecuatoriano Guillermo Lasso, el Tribunal Internacional de los Derechos de la Naturaleza desea expresar su profunda preocupación y compromiso con la defensa de los valores democráticos y los Derechos de la Naturaleza, defendidos por el pueblo de Ecuador.

El 20 de agosto de 2023, un abrumador 58,95% de los ecuatorianos tomó la clara y contundente decisión de preservar el petróleo Yasuní-ITT bajo el subsuelo. Esta decisión no fue sólo un voto; fue una manifestación de la inquebrantable dedicación del pueblo ecuatoriano a la defensa de la Naturaleza y a la preservación de la vida.

Sin embargo, estas declaraciones del Presidente Lasso han suscitado preocupación por el posible desconocimiento de este mandato democrático. El Tribunal de los Derechos de la Naturaleza cree firmemente que la democracia es la piedra angular de cualquier sociedad justa, y que respetar la voluntad del pueblo es esencial para su funcionamiento.

Instamos al Presidente Guillermo Lasso a honrar el mandato democrático expresado por más de 5,5 millones de votantes. Los derechos de la naturaleza y los derechos de los ciudadanos ecuatorianos a expresar su voluntad deben ser respetados. El mundo está mirando, y Ecuador ha sido un símbolo mundial en el reconocimiento de los derechos intrínsecos del medio ambiente. La decisión sobre el yacimiento petrolífero Yasuní-ITT fue un paso histórico en esta dirección, y es imperativo que no se socave.
